Transparent Audio was founded in 1980 by three music lovers and audiophiles with a wealth of educational and employment experiences. This team shaped the development of Transparent Audio and its products with a powerful combination of technical, scientific, mechanical, artistic, musical, and managerial expertise.

Karen and Jack Sumner, two of Transparent's founders, play their Steinway. Karen is Transparent Audio's president, and Jack is head of design. Jack can play six different orchestral instruments and played trombone under the direction of Pierre Monteux in his conductor's school orchestra. Karen's creative vision for Transparent is guided by a degree in literature and art and an advanced degree in administration. She started playing piano at the age of eight.

This team still guides every detail of Transparent's vision to combine musical and technological precision into innovative audio products of lasting musical, aesthetic, and functional value.

Carl Smith, Transparent's third founder, is head of production engineering. In addition to keeping his Victrolas in perfect working order, he's written and published Bouncing with Bud, a comprehensive overview of the recordings of noted jazz pianist Bud Powell. Carl has been recognized in Jazz Times and The New Yorker for his private collection of archival jazz recordings.

A growing team of technical, business, and marketing professionals have joined the three founders over the years to help them expand and carry out their vision.

After eight years of developing, manufacturing, and selling world class audio cables for a sister company, Transparent Audio launched Transparent Cable in 1992 as a totally new and independent design, manufacturing, and sales direction. Transparent Cables immediately caught the attention of music lovers and audiophiles all over the world because of new technologies and new levels of quality in terms of performance, appearance, and construction.

Transparent has grown significantly since 1992. Key members of the audio press and noteworthy audio professionals have joined the legions of music lovers and audiophiles to recognize the musical, technological, and construction qualities of Transparent Cable. Transparent's design and manufacturing techniques continue to evolve to result in new technological and performance benchmarks such as XL Technology.
